The latest hotel occupancy (gross room) analysis includes rankings by region and by destinations.

With an average occupancy rate of 51.1% (2024: 49.4%, 2023: 48.8%), the 50% mark has been surpassed in 2025. In 2025, Geneva and Zurich Region (both 65%) have the highest gross room occupancy rates, while Jura & Three-Lakes (36%) and Eastern Switzerland (40%) have the lowest. The following table shows the regional distribution by month:

City destinations

  • The urban destinations usually have occupancy rates of around 60-70% in the summer months.
  • During the winter months the gross room occupancy rates in Swiss cities are at their lowest. The cities Ascona, Locarno, Lugano and Montreux are under 30%.
  • Lucerne and Zurich top the ranking with occupancy rates of 69% and 75% over the year 2025.

Mountain and rural destinations

In Alpine and rural destinations, gross room occupancy rates vary considerably from month to month. April, May, October and November often have occupancy rates of less than 30%.

Definitions – Good to know:

  • Gross room occupancy rate (EN): Number of occupied rooms divided by the total gross room capacity of the period under review, expressed as a percentage. (The gross room capacity is the number of available rooms in an establishment during the month under review, multiplied by the number of days in the month.)
  • Bruttozimmerauslastung (DE): Anzahl Zimmernächte dividiert durch die gesamte Bruttozimmerkapazität der betreffenden Periode, in Prozenten ausgedrückt. (Die Bruttozimmerkapazität entspricht der Anzahl Zimmer eines Betriebes im Erhebungsmonat multipliziert mit der Anzahl Tage dieses Monats.)
